Recette opened in 2023 on Havemeyer Street, founded by two professional bartenders who've competed in world cocktail championships — which explains why the drinks land harder than the food has to. The kitchen, led by a chef with Masa on his résumé, holds its own: the French bistro classics are executed straight, without fuss.
The Vibe
The room earns its look — white art nouveau embellished ceiling, black-and-white checkered floors, low light, warm enough to settle into. It's small, which means it can tip loud on a Friday, but on a weeknight it hits the right register: unhurried, conversational, France-by-way-of-Brooklyn without the self-consciousness. Some nights there's live jazz; it adds to the atmosphere rather than competing with it. Street-side patio runs in warmer months.
What to Order
- Truffle gnocchi — mushroom, light cream sauce, truffle oil, fresh truffles. The one dish that people seem to order every time back.
- French onion soup — the Gruyère-topped, veal-broth version that reviewers keep citing as a high point. Start here.
- Skip the dessert if you're choosing between the chocolate lava cake and the cardamom panna cotta — the panna cotta is the call, but don't let either crowd out a third cocktail.
When to Come
A weeknight dinner, 7pm. Early enough that the room hasn't filled and you can actually hear each other; late enough that the kitchen's in stride. Happy hour runs Monday through Thursday 4–6pm if you want to keep it loose. Weekend dinner is livelier but louder — good for a second or third date, harder for a first.
The Bottom Line
A genuinely pretty French bistro with cocktails that over-deliver — go on a Tuesday, order the gnocchi and the soup, and let the night run long.
