Upper East Side

Museum mile and martini bars

The Upper East Side is polished but not stuffy — not anymore, at least. Start at the Met or the Guggenheim, walk through the park, and find dinner on one of the side streets off Lexington. The cocktail bars up here are quieter and more civilized, which is either a pro or a con depending on your energy. Best for dates that feel grown-up.

    Vaulted ceiling, marble columns, flowers that actually smell like something — Majorelle is the French restaurant inside The Lowell that makes the Upper East Side feel like its own argument. Order the Dover sole. Let the soufflé take its time.

    The original Felice, on First Avenue since before the others existed. Fifty seats, exposed brick, tufted leather, and a hundred Italian bottles — thirty-plus by the glass. The food is beside the point. Come for the wine and the room.

    A corner gelateria in dusty pink and pale green, with 150 rotating flavors churned in-house. The chocolate pistachio kadaif is the one to get. Order, then take it outside — the room is loud and the sidewalk tables are better anyway.

    An Irish-leaning UES gastropub with 24 taps, a back patio, and a room that gets loud fast. The cocktails are solid, the seared scallop risotto is better than it needs to be, and the vibe is unambiguously bar — not bar-that-tries-to-be-intimate.
