Jacques

7.5

Out of 10

Named for the French painter who built the gardens in Marrakech, Jacques is twenty seats of Art Deco leather and mirror inside the Lowell. The martinis are cold, the cocktail list tilts Moroccan, and the room does all the work.

Reviewed October 2026

Jacques lives inside the Lowell — a 1927 hotel that still operates like a private house — and the bar earns that address. Twenty seats, embossed leather walls, mirrored doors, French oak paneling, geometric marble floors. It's intimate in the way that actually means something: you can hear each other without trying, and the room has enough going on visually that silence never gets awkward.

The Vibe

The design references Jacques Majorelle, the French painter who spent four decades cultivating his Moroccan gardens — and the bar threads that reference without beating you over the head with it. The palette is warm, the light is low. Early in the week it runs quiet and almost residential; weekends fill fast and skew toward hotel guests, which softens the energy slightly. The Cove, a small enclave near the lobby entrance, is the right call for a first date — more private than the main bar, same room.

What to Order

  • Marrakesh Express — vodka, pineapple, Saint-Germain. Sounds simple, lands right. The house cocktail for a reason.
  • Crab cakes — three small patties, shareable, the strongest thing on the food menu. Order one plate between two people.
  • Skip the heavier mains — the lamb tajine and risotto read better on paper than they justify at the price. Stick to bar snacks and cocktails; that's what the kitchen does well.

When to Come

A Tuesday or Wednesday evening, after 6. The room is at its best when it's two-thirds full — enough ambient energy to feel alive, not so packed that the twenty seats feel contested. No reservations for the bar; walk in and ask for The Cove if it's open. The Moroccan Orange (mezcal, orgeat, orange) is worth ordering before you commit to a second martini.

The Bottom Line

A genuinely beautiful hotel bar — small enough to feel like a discovery, polished enough to impress — that earns its keep on a date as long as you treat it as a cocktails-and-snacks evening rather than dinner.
