Black Brick has been doing the same thing since 2011 and hasn't felt the need to explain itself. The room is dark — amber light, aged wood built by the owner from reclaimed barn wood and found objects, shelves of oddities — the kind of interior that takes a decade to accumulate and can't be designed. Walk through it and you hit a backyard that most people on Bedford Avenue don't know exists.
The Vibe
Dim inside, genuinely so — on a sunny afternoon the contrast with the street is dramatic. The front section runs laptop-free, which keeps at least part of the room from feeling like a coworking space. Tables are small, conversation is easy. The backyard opens things up: metal chairs, sunlight, a quieter pace. Weekday mornings belong to the regulars; weekend afternoons fill up but rarely feel chaotic.
What to Order
- Hairbender espresso or latte — Stumptown's signature blend, pulled well here; the iced latte is the move in warm weather.
- Tahini chocolate chunk cookie — the bakery item that earns its place; worth getting before they're gone.
- Skip the cold brew — the espresso drinks are where the bar is set; the cold brew doesn't clear it.
When to Come
A warm afternoon or early evening — the backyard is the whole argument for routing a date through here. Works best as a first stop before dinner, or a loose afternoon that doesn't have a plan yet. No reservations, no waiting list; just walk in.
The Bottom Line
A genuinely good coffee stop with a room that took years to earn — slot it into a Williamsburg afternoon and you won't regret it, but it's not worth crossing a bridge for.
