Balera

Out of 10

Sexy East Williamsburg pizzeria with Roman-style pies, Italian wine, and disco-ball lighting after dark.

Reviewed May 2026

Balera is the kind of place that works whether you’re on a date or out with friends, but it definitely has date-night DNA. The room is warm, the staff is great, and around 10, the lights drop and the disco ball starts doing its thing. Order a bottle of wine, share a few thin Roman-style pies, and suddenly dinner feels like the beginning of the night instead of the whole plan.

The Vibe

Polished but not stiff. Balera has that East Williamsburg thing where it feels casual enough to walk into, but sexy enough that you’re glad you dressed well. Earlier in the night, it’s a lively dinner spot. Later, the room gets darker, the lighting gets better, and it starts to feel more like a low-key party with pizza.

Good for a date, especially if you want something with more energy than a quiet wine bar. Also very good for a group of friends before going out.

What to Order

  • Sardoncini marinati — bright, citrusy, and a great way to start before pizza.
  • Rossa — the standout pie. Marinara, garlic, anchovies, caper leaves, black olives, Sicilian oregano, and basil. Salty, savory, and easily the most memorable.
  • Tiramisù — creamy, classic, and exactly the kind of dessert you want to split at the end.

When to Come

Come later if you want the full effect. Around 10, the room gets dimmer and the disco-ball lighting kicks in, which makes it feel much more like a date spot than a casual pizza dinner.

Best for a second or third date, a double date, or a dinner that might turn into drinks after. It’s also a strong group spot if you want somewhere fun but still grown-up.

The Bottom Line

Go for the wine, the lighting, and the Rossa — Balera is one of those dinners that makes you want to stay out later.
