Oysters, Bistro & Black Sesame in Williamsburg

Date · Williamsburg · Romantic

A swoon-worthy Williamsburg evening that moves from candlelit oysters and Sazeracs at a New Orleans-styled garden bar, through a art nouveau French bistro built by bartenders who know how to set a scene, and lands at a Le Bernardin-trained chef's intimate dessert counter for a Japanese-French finale.

Editor’s Pick

Williamsburg · $$$ · Oyster bar restaurant · American restaurant

Walk into Maison Premiere and let your eyes adjust — the candlelight is doing a lot of heavy lifting in the best possible way. Post up at the marble horseshoe bar, order the tableside Sazerac, and pick two or three oysters off the rotating board to share while the room slowly fills around you. This is the kind of place where an hour disappears before you realize you haven't checked your phone once.

298 Bedford Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11249

~6 min walk (0.3 mi). From Maison Premiere to Recette, you're heading east on Bedford and cutting down toward Havemeyer — it's a short stroll through the heart of Williamsburg. Notice the murals along the side streets; they sneak up on you.

02Dinner

Recette

Williamsburg · $$$ · French restaurant · Bistro

Recette is what happens when two competition bartenders decide to open a French bistro — the cocktails are as considered as the food, and the room (art nouveau ceiling, black-and-white checkered floors) is prettier than it has any right to be for a Wednesday night. Start with the French onion soup, its Gruyère crust properly bronzed, and don't sleep on the truffle gnocchi. If there's live jazz, you're already winning.

103 Havemeyer St, Brooklyn, NY 11211

~8 min walk (0.4 mi). Recette to Patisserie Tomoko is a quick walk up Union Ave — both are on the same stretch, so no navigation stress. Heads up: Tomoko keeps early hours on most nights (closing around 8pm on Fridays and Saturdays), so time your dinner accordingly and aim to arrive before closing.

03Dessert

Williamsburg · $$ · Patisserie · Dessert restaurant

Patisserie Tomoko is a genuine one-of-one: a Le Bernardin-trained chef doing a Japanese-inflected French dessert tasting at a quiet counter in Williamsburg. The black sesame crème brûlée and yuzu cheesecake are the moves, and a glass of sake on the side turns dessert into its own little ceremony. Book the prix fixe in advance — the counter seats go fast and this is absolutely worth planning around.
