THE ELK on Charles Street is the rare coffee shop that earns its own detour — exposed brick, shelves of ceramics and home goods, and a genuinely unhurried pace that suits an afternoon with nowhere to be. Get a pourover or a latte and poke around the shelves together; it's the kind of place where you'll end up disagreeing about which candle to buy, which counts as bonding. The daytime bites are light and good, in case the wine from the last stop was more than a glass.
~7 min walk (0.4 mi). From THE ELK, head south on Hudson and then cut over toward Bleecker — you'll pass through the heart of the West Village's tucked-away stretch before the street opens up near Christopher. The walk is short but dense with good window-shopping.

Venchi is a 19th-century Turinese chocolate house that somehow landed on Bleecker, and it earns every bit of the fuss. The pistachio gelato is the move — order it in a waffle cone — and if you time it right, you can watch the chocolate fountain dispense hazelnut spread onto a fresh crêpe while standing just close enough together that it feels intentional. Open until midnight on weekends, so there's no rush to wrap up.
