Creperie

Village creperie

5.5

Out of 10

A tiny East Village counter — three stools, three sidewalk tables — that does savory galettes and Nutella crepes well enough to justify a detour on a slow Sunday morning. The apple walnut with caramel is the move. Don't come at dinner; they're closed.

Village Creperie is a daytime café that does one thing and does it without much fuss: crepes, folded and handed over a counter, eaten at one of three sidewalk tables if you're lucky enough to snag one.

The Vibe

The room is essentially the counter. Three stools inside, three small tables out front — that's the full footprint. On a weekday morning it's quiet; on a weekend afternoon the sidewalk fills up fast and there's nowhere to wait except the street. No ambient lighting to speak of, no bar, no mood. The energy is order-and-eat, not linger-and-talk.

What to Order

  • Apple walnut crepe with caramel — the sweet option that actually earns it, with enough texture from the walnuts to keep it from tipping saccharine.
  • Spicy Moroccan chicken galette — the savory side of the menu at its most interesting; better than the standard ham-and-cheese if you want something with a point of view.
  • Skip the smoothies — the crepes are the reason to be here; the smoothie menu reads like a juice bar afterthought and pulls focus from what they actually do well.

When to Come

This is a weekend brunch stop, full stop. Come between 9 and 11 on a Saturday before the sidewalk tables fill. It works as an opener to a slow East Village morning — walk down 9th Street, grab a crepe, figure out the day. It closes by 7 or 8pm, so it plays no role in an evening plan.

The Bottom Line

A fine daytime detour if you're already in the East Village and want something better than a bodega, but not a place you'd route a date around.
