Van Leeuwen Ice Cream

6.5

Out of 10

Started as a yellow food truck in 2008, now the best scoop stop in the West Village. Earl Grey and Honeycomb in a cone. Benches outside on a tree-lined block. The kind of detour that turns into a twenty-minute linger.

Reviewed June 2026

Van Leeuwen has been the right answer to "let's get something sweet" in the West Village since 2008, and the formula hasn't changed: grass-fed cream, organic egg yolks, no stabilizers, and flavors that taste like something instead of just cold and sweet.

The Vibe

Small — a few seats inside, benches out front on West 10th Street's tree-lined block. The room is bright and tight; you order, you step aside, you end up outside. On a warm evening the sidewalk scene is half the appeal. On a cold one, the shop stays warm and the line moves fast. Friday and Saturday nights it gets packed, which in a space this size means loud and shoulder-to-shoulder at the counter.

What to Order

  • Earl Grey — sweet cream base steeped with bergamot; restrained and specific, the flavor that regulars come back for
  • Honeycomb — gooey honeycomb candy pieces in a caramel-forward base; crunch-to-cream ratio earns it a cone, not a cup
  • The sundaes are a step up if you want to sit: the Sicilian Pistachio Cream Sundae (pistachio ice cream, hot fudge, pistachio cream, honey almond slivers) is worth the extra minutes — but skip the milkshakes, which add calories without adding anything the scoop doesn't already do better

When to Come

Best folded into a longer West Village night — after dinner, before a bar, or as the last move before the subway. A weeknight around 9pm hits the sweet spot: open late, not yet packed. The vegan line-up is genuinely good here (cashew milk, coconut cream, real cocoa butter), which matters if one of you doesn't do dairy.

The Bottom Line

Not a destination on its own, but it's the best version of this stop — worth routing the end of the night around.
