Rice To Riches

5.5

Out of 10

A Spring Street institution since 2003 — and possibly the only business in the world where you order rice pudding by the pound, choose from twenty-plus flavors, and read jokes about money laundering off the walls while you wait.

Rice To Riches has been on Spring Street since 2003, doing exactly one thing: rice pudding, in twenty-plus flavors, from a space-age room that looks like it was designed by someone who saw a Jetsons episode and decided to open a dessert shop. It works. It's also unmistakably, stubbornly itself — and that's either the appeal or the problem, depending on who you bring.

The Vibe

Bright, loud, and unapologetically kitschy. The room runs on floating tables, neon tones, and wall-to-wall jokey signage — "Sin Legally," "Eat Now, Think Later" — that reads as early-2000s confidence in its own bit. The humor has aged unevenly; some of it lands, some of it doesn't. Seating is limited and first-come, no reservations. On a Friday night it fills fast with a tourist-heavy crowd. The energy is fun but not intimate — this is a place you grab something and share it, not linger over.

What to Order

  • Man-Made Mascarpone — mascarpone folded into the pudding with cherries. The richest thing on the menu and the right call on a first visit.
  • Category 5 Caramel with roasted burst cherries as a topping — the combination that makes the toppings worth the upcharge.
  • The SOLO size — skip it unless you're eating alone. The EPIC serves two comfortably and is a better deal; sharing is the whole point of coming here.

When to Come

After dinner on a Nolita walk — this is punctuation, not a plan. Best slotted between a meal on Mulberry and a nightcap somewhere on Elizabeth. Open until 1am on weekends, which makes it genuinely useful late. Don't try to linger; the seating isn't designed for it.

The Bottom Line

A singular NYC oddity that's more fun as a shared moment than a destination — worth the detour if you're already in the neighborhood, not worth building the night around.
