MarieBelle & Cacao Bar Soho

7.5

Out of 10

A chocolate salon tucked behind MarieBelle's SoHo boutique: antique clocks, ornate chandeliers, the Aztec hot chocolate, and wine-and-chocolate pairings if you want to stay longer. Open since 2001, and the room still looks like it costs more than it does.

Reviewed September 2026

MarieBelle's Cacao Bar is the kind of stop that becomes the thing people remember about the date — not dinner, not whatever came after, but the thirty minutes they spent sitting under a chandelier drinking something thick and dark and warm.

The Vibe

Walk through the retail shop — gilded display cases, single-origin bars stacked like jewels — and the bar is in the back. Antique furniture, ornate clocks, crystal chandelier light. The room is small and deliberately quiet; it reads like a Parisian salon that someone moved to SoHo and forgot to modernize, which is the right call. Weekday afternoons are nearly empty. Saturdays fill fast, especially around the holidays — reserve ahead.

What to Order

  • Aztec hot chocolate — made from 60% South American single-origin cacao, unsweetened enough that the whipped cream does actual work. This is the order. Everything else is supplemental.
  • Molten chocolate lava cake — worth sharing. The lava cake actually delivers.
  • The afternoon tea set — the savory tier is the weakest part: finger sandwiches are competent but generic. Go for the chocolate drinks and desserts; the tea set is for people who want the full experience, not necessarily the best one.

When to Come

A weekday between 3 and 6pm is the sweet spot — quiet enough to talk, relaxed enough to linger. Friday or Saturday evenings work but book a reservation. This is a date for someone who'd rather do something specific than something predictable.

The Bottom Line

One of the few stops in SoHo genuinely worth building a plan around — go for the Aztec hot chocolate, stay for the room.
