Canto opened on Perry Street in late 2021 and has been doing the West Village Italian thing ever since — brick walls, warm light, a flower-adorned Vespa out front, full-length windows that crack open onto the street in good weather. The room looks like a date night. The food is a step behind the atmosphere.
The Vibe
Butcher-block tables, crossbeam ceilings, exposed brick, and candles that do most of the heavy lifting. It's small and the tables are packed in tight — you will hear the couple next to you. Early in the week it stays low-key; Thursday onward it fills fast, the room gets loud, and the energy tips social rather than intimate. Someone will probably be celebrating a birthday, and there's a reasonable chance 50 Cent will be involved.
What to Order
- Frozen espresso martini — the signature, and the thing people come back for. Frothy, well-balanced, properly cold. Order it first.
- Bucatini alla carbonara — pancetta, egg, Parmesan, Roman style. When it lands right, it's the best thing on the menu.
- The pasta can run underseasoned on a busy night — if the carbonara tastes flat, salt it immediately and don't order a second round of pasta.
When to Come
Tuesday or Wednesday at 7pm — quiet enough to talk, staffed well enough that the service holds. Reserve on Resy; walk-ins work early in the week but not on weekends. The bar and window seats are smaller than advertised, so ask for a table when you book or you may end up elbow-to-elbow at the counter.
The Bottom Line
A good-looking room with an Instagram-famous cocktail and pasta that earns its keep about two-thirds of the time — fine for an early date, better for a second one.
