Barachou does one thing — the French cream puff, or chou — and has been doing it well enough since 2019 that the UWS still shows up for it. The menu rotates weekly: pistachio one weekend, peanut butter the next, lemon meringue when the season calls for it. The tarts are worth the detour on their own.
The Vibe
Pink walls, very small room, seating for essentially one party at a time. Daytime light through the front window. The smell hits before you open the door. It's not a place to linger — the space doesn't allow it — but the ten minutes you spend here are good ones. Weekday afternoons are the move; weekends draw a line.
What to Order
- Cream puffs (choux), whatever flavor is rotating — the shell is light, the craquelin top adds crunch, and the cream inside doesn't veer sweet. Get two.
- Fruit tart — sweet crust, clean pastry cream, fresh fruit on top. Straightforward and done right.
- Skip the macarons — competent, but the choux is what Barachou is actually about. Don't spend the stop on the thing every other French bakery does.
When to Come
This is an afternoon stop, full stop — the shop closes at 7pm, which makes it a pre-dinner punctuation mark, not an evening plan. Best slotted after the Natural History Museum or a Central Park walk, before you head to dinner. No reservations, no table service. Get there before 5pm on a weekend if you want anything left.
The Bottom Line
A genuinely singular stop on an afternoon UWS date — worth building the timing around if you're already in the neighborhood, not worth a crosstown trip on its own.
