Brunch restaurant

Arden

Out of 10

A wood-fired corner restaurant from two industry veterans who took over a beloved Crown Heights space and made it their own. The grill runs everything, the records spin all night, and the menu changes before you can memorize it. Come for dinner; stay for the bar.

Reviewed September 2026

Arden is the restaurant Scott Dansby and Mark Mata built for the neighborhood they actually live in — which is another way of saying it doesn't try to impress you, and ends up doing exactly that. The corner spot on Franklin and Lincoln Place has been running a wood-fired grill and a rotating seasonal menu since 2022, and the room feels earned rather than designed.

The Vibe

The exterior announces itself — a painted mural by a local Parsons instructor — but inside it settles into something looser. Open kitchen, the smell of the grill, Dansby's own record collection on the speakers. It's not a candlelit-table-for-two kind of room; it's a corner restaurant where the energy comes from the bar and the kitchen in roughly equal measure.

What to Order

  • Gruyère burger with caramelized whisky onions, Sauce Morales, and salt & vinegar fries — the anchor of the menu, the thing to order when the seasonal specials feel like a gamble.
  • Whatever the bar is doing — the cocktail list rotates and skews inventive; let it be the second reason you came.
  • Don't anchor the order to the seasonal specials alone — the menu rotates often enough that what read well online may not be what's in the kitchen that night; the burger is the reliable spine.

When to Come

Thursday or Friday at the start of service, before the late-night rush fills the bar. Reservations are worth making on weekends. Happy hour runs daily from 5 to 7 — a good window to settle in before the room shifts.

The Bottom Line

A genuinely good Crown Heights dinner — easygoing enough for a second date, interesting enough for a first.
