Sommeliers, Velvet, and Bar Goto — LES

Date · Lower East Side · $$$$

A Lower East Side evening that moves from a wine bar run by certified sommeliers, through a chandelier-lit French bistro that earns every cliché, and lands at one of the city's most quietly legendary cocktail bars.

01Drinks

Lower East Side · $$$ · Wine bar · Bar

Every single person taking your order at Somm Time is a certified sommelier — so when they nudge you toward an obscure Jura white or a natural Sicilian red you've never heard of, trust them completely. The vibe is candlelit and unhurried, the kind of place where a first drink turns into three without anyone noticing. Start with the tuna crudo tacos and let the by-the-glass list do the talking.

254 Broome St, New York, NY 10002

~1 min walk (0.0 mi). From Somm Time on Broome St, head north toward Delancey — it's a quick walk through the heart of the LES. Keep an eye on the old tenement buildings lining the side streets; they're a good reminder that this neighborhood has hosted romantics of every era.

02Dinner

Lower East Side · $$$ · French restaurant · Bistro

Le Jardin Bistro is the rare LES spot that actually earns the word "romantic" without trying too hard — chandeliers overhead, velvet banquettes beneath you, and a menu anchored by steak tartare and beef bourguignon that feel properly Parisian. This is a room that does the heavy lifting for you. If the weather cooperates, the seasonal garden seating turns the whole thing into a minor miracle.

95 Delancey St First Floor, New York, NY 10002

~6 min walk (0.3 mi). Le Jardin sits on Delancey, which technically edges toward the border of LES proper — but it's squarely in the spirit of the neighborhood. From there, wander down to Eldridge St for Bar Goto. The Eldridge Street Mosque and Synagogue along the way is worth a glance if you pass it at night — it's beautifully lit.

03Nightcap

BAR GOTO

Lower East Side · $$ · Cocktail bar · Bar

Kenta Goto's thirty-seat bar on Eldridge has been one of the best cocktail rooms in the city since 2015, and it hasn't slipped an inch. Order the Sakura Martini — gin, sake, maraschino, salted cherry blossom — and the miso wings, and resign yourself to the fact that you're not leaving anytime soon. The bar seats are the move: cozy, close, and built for exactly this kind of night.
