A date plan

Rosso, Maretta, and Cannoli in East Village

Date · East Village

Start with orange wine and ham croquetas at a candlelit Spanish-Argentine wine bar, move to a moody Italian newcomer with a crackling pizza oven, and end the night splitting a cannoli under a stained-glass ceiling at a 130-year-old pasticceria.

01Drinks

East Village · $$ · Wine bar · Mediterranean restaurant

Rosso is the kind of place where you order one glass and somehow end up discussing your third. Low light, burlap wine lists, and a long narrow room that practically forces you closer together. Lead with the ham croquetas — they're crispy, salty, and gone faster than you'd like — then let the orange wine do the rest of the talking.

127 E 7th St, New York, NY 10009

~6 min walk (0.3 mi). From Rosso on E 7th to Maretta on Avenue B, you'll pass through the heart of the East Village's old Latin quarter — peek into the neon glow of the Ukrainian diners still holding down 7th Street.

02Dinner

East Village · $$$ · Italian restaurant · Cocktail bar

Maretta landed on Avenue B in late 2024 and immediately felt like it had been there for years — concrete walls, candlelight flickering off a live pizza oven behind the bar, and a seasonal Italian menu that doesn't overcomplicate things. Order the mussels to start and a Negroni Shakerato for the table, and whatever you do, skip the bucatini al limone — there are better choices on this menu.

27 Avenue B, New York, NY 10009

~10 min walk (0.5 mi). From Maretta, head north on Avenue B and cut over to East 11th — Veniero's cheerful awning is hard to miss. The neighborhood gets quieter up here, which is a nice gear-shift after dinner.

03Dessert

East Village · $ · Cafe · Bakery

Veniero's has occupied the same corner of East 11th Street since 1894, and the forty-foot glass pastry case hasn't lost a step. Pull a number at the door, slide into a marble table beneath the stained-glass ceiling, and let the debate about whether to split the cheesecake carry you into the night. Cannoli are mandatory; the espresso is a bonus.
