~3 min walk (0.1 mi). From Rake on 1st Ave, head north and east toward 5th Street — it's a quick, pretty walk past some of the East Village's best-kept brownstone blocks. Notice the community garden on E 6th if you pass it; it's one of the oldest in the city.

Risotteria Melotti is a love letter to Northern Italian rice cookery — every bowl is silky, slow-cooked, and deeply satisfying in a way that pasta rarely manages. The exposed brick room is intimate without being cramped, and the menu is creative enough to give you plenty to debate over. Go for the barolo risotto if it's on — it's a date in a bowl.
~3 min walk (0.2 mi). From Risotteria Melotti on E 5th, head a few blocks north to E 9th Street for Lady Wong. The stretch of 9th between 1st and 2nd Ave has a lovely neighborhood-within-a-neighborhood feel — worth slowing down for a window-shop on the way.

Lady Wong is where French pastry technique meets Southeast Asian flavor, and the results are genuinely jaw-dropping. The cakes are almost too pretty to eat — almost. Share a pandan layer cake or a mango-coconut tart and let the afternoon stretch out over something beautiful.
