A date plan

Negronis, Perry St, and Merveilleux, West Village

Date · West Village · Romantic · $$$$

A properly indulgent West Village evening that moves from a candlelit wine bar buzzing with Mediterranean energy, to one of the neighborhood's most quietly glamorous dining rooms, and ends with a cloud of cream-and-meringue from a Lille-born institution tucked into a landmarked townhouse.

01Drinks

West Village · $$ · Wine bar

CARTA opened on Bedford Street in late 2024 and already feels like a secret the West Village is trying to keep to itself. Thirty seats, warm amber lighting, and a Mediterranean wine list built around family-owned and biodynamic producers — think Greek whites and juicy Italian reds you won't find anywhere else on the block. Start with the gambas al ajillo and let Rebecca Powelson's list do the talking.

35 Bedford St, New York, NY 10014

~9 min walk (0.5 mi). From CARTA, head south on Bedford Street — it's one of the most atmospheric blocks in the city at night, all gaslit and tree-canopied. Wind through Christopher Street toward Perry Street and keep your eyes peeled for the Hudson peeking through at the end of the blocks.

02Dinner

West Village · $$$ · American restaurant · Asian restaurant

Jean-Georges Vongerichten and his son Cedric run one of the city's most quietly spectacular dining rooms inside Richard Meier's glass tower on the Hudson — floor-to-ceiling windows, clean modernist lines, and a menu where delicate French technique meets bold Asian accents. The tuna ribbons with ginger and the black bass with forbidden rice are perennial stunners. This is the kind of place where conversation slows down because you keep stopping to look at the view.

176 Perry St, New York, NY 10014

~8 min walk (0.4 mi). After dinner, you'll be walking away from the river and back into the heart of the West Village — enjoy it slowly. The streets between Perry and 8th Ave are some of the quietest and prettiest in Manhattan after 9pm. Fred's is a quick stop, so treat the walk as the third act.

03Dessert

West Village · $ · Cafe · Bakery

Aux Merveilleux de Fred operates out of an 1850 landmarked townhouse on 8th Ave, and the whole transaction takes about four minutes — which is exactly what a late-night dessert stop should be. Step up to the glass case, pick your meringue sphere (they come in six flavors, each one rolled in something wonderful like dark chocolate curls or praline), and wander back into the West Village streets. No seats, no lingering required — the night takes care of itself from here.
