Chef Riccardo Orfino shops the Union Square Greenmarket daily, and it shows: the agnolotti cacio e pepe is the move, full stop, but the bucatini limone with colatura is a close second. Reserve the front room or main dining room for the most intimate experience — the bar gets lively later in the week.

Alice is on W 13th St, which nudges just slightly toward the border of the West Village and Greenwich Village — you're still firmly in the neighborhood's spirit if not its strictest geography. From Alice, head west on W 12th or W 11th toward 8th Ave to find Aux Merveilleux de Fred. The walk itself, past stoops with window boxes and corner bistros spilling light onto the street, is half the date.
