A date plan

Negronis, Lobster, and Merveilleux, West Village

Date · West Village · Romantic · $$

A romantic West Village evening that moves from a candlelit wine bar to a basement Italian seafood den, finishing with a Lille-born meringue confection on the cobblestones.

01Drinks

West Village · $$ · Bar · Italian restaurant

Tucked onto Bedford Street like it's been there forever, Aria Wine Bar is the kind of place where the night slows down in the best way. The wine list champions female vintners — a great conversation starter — and the small plates (think charcuterie, burrata, bruschetta) are exactly right for taking the edge off without filling up. Grab a corner spot if you can; the low lighting does all the heavy lifting.

16 Bedford St, New York, NY 10014

~12 min walk (0.6 mi). From Aria to Alice, you're threading through the heart of the West Village — take Bedford to Grove Street and let yourself get a little lost. These blocks have some of the best Federal-style townhouses in the city; peek down the narrower side streets.

02Dinner

West Village · $$$ · Italian restaurant · Bar

Down a brownstone staircase and into one of the West Village's most quietly stunning rooms — antique knick-knacks, trailing pothos, guttering candles, and a skylight that makes the whole place feel like a secret. Chef Riccardo Orfino shops the Union Square Greenmarket daily, and it shows: the agnolotti cacio e pepe is the move, full stop, but the bucatini limone with colatura is a close second. Reserve the front room or main dining room for the most intimate experience — the bar gets lively later in the week.

126 W 13th St, New York, NY 10011

~6 min walk (0.3 mi). Alice is on W 13th St, which nudges just slightly toward the border of the West Village and Greenwich Village — you're still firmly in the neighborhood's spirit if not its strictest geography. From Alice, head west on W 12th or W 11th toward 8th Ave to find Aux Merveilleux de Fred. The walk itself, past stoops with window boxes and corner bistros spilling light onto the street, is half the date.

03Dessert

West Village · $ · Cafe · Bakery

End the night at this Lille-born meringue shop tucked into a landmarked 1850 townhouse on 8th Ave — you can watch the bakers through the glass while you decide between six flavors of frosted cream-and-meringue spheres. It's a four-minute stop that somehow becomes the thing you're still talking about on the subway home. No seats, no fuss — just grab two merveilleux and wander the cobblestones.
