Jazz, Cocktails, and Italian in West Village

Hangout · West Village

A West Village evening built for a group — starting with natural wine and gambas on Bedford Street, moving into a candlelit Italian dinner on Cornelia, and ending underground with live jazz and handcrafted cocktails at the neighborhood's most legendary late-night bar.

01Drinks

West Village · $$ · Wine bar

Kick things off at CARTA, the 30-seat Mediterranean wine bar that opened on Bedford Street in late 2024 and immediately became the kind of spot locals whisper about. The wine list leans biodynamic and family-owned — Greek whites, Spanish pours, Italian gems — and the gambas al ajillo are the kind of thing you'll still be talking about at dinner. It's small, so arrive a little early and grab whatever stools you can.

35 Bedford St, New York, NY 10014

~3 min walk (0.1 mi). Walking from CARTA to Palma, you'll wind through the heart of the West Village's most picturesque blocks — keep an eye out for the classic brownstone stoops and the way the streetlights catch the cobblestones on Commerce Street.

02Dinner

West Village · $$$ · Italian restaurant · Bar

Palma has been doing unhurried, candlelit Italian on Cornelia Street since 2001, and the ivy-covered back garden is one of the genuinely great rooms in the West Village — request it when you book. Housemade pasta, organic ingredients, and tables spaced far enough apart that you can actually hear each other. For a group that wants to linger, this is the spot.

28 Cornelia St, New York, NY 10014

~3 min walk (0.2 mi). From Palma, it's a short stroll south toward 7th Avenue South. Little Branch is easy to miss — the entrance looks like nothing, which is exactly the point. Look for the small door near the corner and head downstairs.

03Late Night Drinks

West Village · $ · Cocktail bar · Bar

End the night at Little Branch — look for the unmarked door on 7th Avenue South, take the steep stairs down, and find your spot under the corrugated steel ceiling. A live jazz trio takes over around 10pm, the cocktails are flawless classics, and the house rules (no hats, no name-dropping, no nonsense) keep the vibe exactly right. Order whatever the bartender suggests and plan to stay longer than you intended.
