A date plan

Gambas, Pasta, and Pastry in the West Village

Date · West Village · Romantic

A slow, indulgent West Village evening that moves from a buzzy new wine bar on Bedford Street to a candlelit Italian garden, finishing with Parisian pastry from a neighborhood institution.

01Drinks

West Village · $$ · Wine bar

CARTA is thirty seats, warm amber light, and a Mediterranean wine list that skews family-owned and biodynamic — the kind of place that makes you feel like you found something before everyone else did (you almost did; it opened in late 2024). Start with a Greek white — the moschofilero is worth asking about — and split the gambas al ajillo while you settle in. Reservations are smart on weekends; walk-ins are a gamble worth taking on a weeknight.

35 Bedford St, New York, NY 10014

~3 min walk (0.1 mi). From CARTA on Bedford Street to Palma on Cornelia Street, you're essentially threading the prettiest block-and-a-half in the West Village — go slow, peek down the side streets, and let the cobblestones do their thing.

02Dinner

West Village · $$$ · Italian restaurant · Bar

Palma has been doing this since 2001 — ivy climbing the walls, housemade pasta, candlelight doing exactly what candlelight is supposed to do. The back garden is the move: tables spaced generously, the kind of unhurried quiet that makes a two-hour dinner feel like twenty minutes. The kitchen leans on organic ingredients and old-school Italian craft; don't skip the pasta, and request the garden when you book.

28 Cornelia St, New York, NY 10014

~2 min walk (0.1 mi). Cornelia to West 4th Street is a short, charming walk through the heart of the neighborhood — note the handsome brownstones and the village-within-a-city hush that makes this part of Manhattan feel like nowhere else.

03Dessert

West Village · $ · Bakery · Cake shop

Claude Bakery is a West Village original — the space is tiny (three tables, plan accordingly), but the viennoiserie program is serious. Grab a pain au chocolat or a slice of Manhattan blackout cake and take it to the street — the West Village at night is its own dessert course. This is a stop, not a sit-down, and it's better for it.
