Books Are Magic is a proper neighborhood indie bookstore — well-curated, with staff picks that actually reflect real taste rather than publisher placement fees. It's the perfect mid-day browse for a group: everyone disappears into a different section and reconvenes with armfuls of recommendations to debate. Check the events calendar too — author readings pop up regularly and are always a good time.
~9 min walk (0.4 mi). From Books Are Magic, cut over to Court Street and head south toward Yesterday's News. The stretch of Court between Union and 3rd Place has some great small shop windows worth a slow look as you go.

A few blocks up Court Street, Yesterday's News is a wonderfully chaotic antique and collectibles shop stuffed with pre-1970s furniture, vintage jewelry, records, and oddities you won't find anywhere else. Budget at least 30 minutes — someone in your crew will inevitably find something ridiculous they absolutely need. The record bins alone are a deep dive.
~7 min walk (0.4 mi). Queue Beer is right near the top of that same Court Street stretch, so the transition from the antique shop is a natural northward drift. Note: Queue Beer sits right at the edge of the neighborhood near the Gowanus border — still very much a Carroll Gardens crowd, just a touch further from the Smith Street core.
