The room is Italian-rustic and genuinely candlelit, the kind of place where a single order of lamb ragù mafalde turns into a two-hour stay. Go early, grab one of the small tables, and let the evening find its own pace.
~10 min walk (0.5 mi). From Spes on E 12th to Maretta on Avenue B, you'll cut south through Tompkins Square Park — walk through the park itself if the evening is warm; it's one of the better date walks in the neighborhood.

Maretta landed on Avenue B in late 2024 and immediately felt like it had always been there — concrete walls, candlelight, a pizza oven quietly doing its thing behind the bar. Order the mussels, a Negroni Shakerato, and whatever seasonal pasta the kitchen is feeling confident about. It's honest Italian comfort food with just enough style to feel like a night out.
~5 min walk (0.3 mi). Maretta to Amor y Amargo is a short stroll east along 6th Street — keep an eye out for the low-key entrance; the bar is easy to miss, which is part of the charm.

NYC's original bitters bar closed, renovated, and came roaring back to E 6th Street in 2025 — same penny-tile counter, same wall of ~350 amaro bottles, same bartenders who clearly love their weird job. Order the Sharpie Mustache (amaro, rye, gin, tiki bitters — it works, trust it) and plan on staying for at least two. Standing room only, so lean in.
