Bitters and Blossoms on the Lower East Side

Date · Lower East Side

A two-stop cocktail crawl through the LES's most distinctive bars — one built around Japanese craft, one obsessed with Italian bitters — that turns a late-night drink into a proper event.

01First Drinks

BAR GOTO

Lower East Side · $$ · Cocktail bar · Bar

Bar Goto is thirty seats, all of them good. Kenta Goto spent seven years at Pegu Club before opening this tiny izakaya-bar on Eldridge, and you can taste that obsession in every glass. Start with the Sakura Martini — gin, sake, maraschino, and a salted cherry blossom — and order the miso wings before the bar fills up around you.

~7 min walk (0.4 mi). Walking from Bar Goto to Amor y Amargo, you'll cut across the LES grid — take Eldridge to Delancey and head east toward Avenue A. It's a short stroll worth taking slowly; the neighborhood has a great late-night energy at this hour. Note: Amor y Amargo is on E 6th St near Avenue A, which puts it just at the edge of the East Village — true to the spirit of your request even if the map puts it a block or two over the line.

02Nightcap

Lower East Side · $$ · Bar · Cocktail bar

Amor y Amargo is NYC's original bitters bar, and it earns that title every single night. The walls are lined with roughly 350 amaro bottles, the counter is penny tile, and the bartenders actually want to talk you through all of it. Order the Sharpie Mustache — amaro, rye, gin, Bonal, tiki bitters — and let the night go long.
